GHOSTS OF THE CIVIL WAR
©2005 LARRY BARAN

VERSE 1
Down by the riverside where the hopes of soldiers died
Down by the river edge tasted defeat and laid to rest
Down by the river shore blue meets grey to end the war
Battles live and battles end the fallen rise to walk again

CHORUS 1
Two union soldiers pass by
Two restless spirits ask why
"we fight wars ...still fighting wars"

VERSE 2
Bull Run and Wilson's Creek forged the strong and ruled the weak
At Bloody Shiloh and Bloody Lane warrior blood fell like rain
3 days at Gettysburg waiting for the freedom words
Down by the river edge Confederate dreams laid to rest, but

CHORUS 2
Two grey-clad soldiers pass by
Two restless spirits ask why
"we fight wars ...still fighting wars"

BRIDGE
War looks different to different men.
Like beauty, it is in the eyes of them
that fight for honor and fight for peace
and die for justice and for the weak.
Only the dead know the value of their sacrifice.
Only the living have not paid the price to live.

VERSE 3
General Lee and General Grant, Jefferson Davis and Abraham
Constitution children bred to rule the living and bless the dead
Antietem showed the price they paid; the civil war's deadliest day
Emancipating freedom's soul the war was fought and now we know why

CHORUS 3
Two Union soldiers pass by
Two restless spirits ask why
"we fight wars ...still fighting wars"
